The Ultimate Savory Twist Chive Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients:
• 4 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tablespoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 ½ cups buttermilk
• 1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
• ¼ cup fresh chives, finely chopped
• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (optional)
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Stir in the shredded cheddar and chopped chives until evenly distributed.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Mix gently with a wooden spoon or your hands until the dough comes together. Avoid overmixing; the dough should be sticky but manageable.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly, about 1 minute. Shape into a round loaf approximately 8 inches in diameter.
- Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet and cut a deep ‘X’ on the top with a sharp knife.
- Optional: Brush the top with melted butter for extra richness and a golden crust.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
