Homemade Croissants
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 4 teaspoons instant yeast
- 2 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/4 cups butter (cold)
- 1 cup warm milk
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Gradually add the warm milk and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Add the Butter:
- Roll the dough into a rectangle.
- Place slices or a block of cold butter in the center and fold the dough over it like an envelope.
- Roll out gently to flatten without letting the butter leak out.
- Fold it into thirds (like folding a letter).
- Wrap in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.
- Repeat the rolling and folding process 3 more times, chilling 30 minutes each time.
- Shape the Croissants:
- Roll the dough into a large circle (about 1/4 inch thick).
- Cut into 8–12 triangles.
- Starting from the wide end, roll each triangle toward the tip to form a crescent shape.
- Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Second Rise:
- Cover lightly with a towel and let rise for about 1 hour or until puffy.
- Bake:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush the croissants with beaten egg (optional, for shine).
- Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Serve:
- Let cool slightly and enjoy warm with butter, jam, or chocolate! 😋
