Homemade Croissants

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/4 cups butter (cold)
  • 1 cup warm milk

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
    • Gradually add the warm milk and mix until a soft dough forms.
    • Knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Cover and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  2. Add the Butter:
    • Roll the dough into a rectangle.
    • Place slices or a block of cold butter in the center and fold the dough over it like an envelope.
    • Roll out gently to flatten without letting the butter leak out.
    • Fold it into thirds (like folding a letter).
    • Wrap in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.
    • Repeat the rolling and folding process 3 more times, chilling 30 minutes each time.
  3. Shape the Croissants:
    • Roll the dough into a large circle (about 1/4 inch thick).
    • Cut into 8–12 triangles.
    • Starting from the wide end, roll each triangle toward the tip to form a crescent shape.
    • Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Second Rise:
    • Cover lightly with a towel and let rise for about 1 hour or until puffy.
  5. Bake:
    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Brush the croissants with beaten egg (optional, for shine).
    • Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  6. Serve:
    • Let cool slightly and enjoy warm with butter, jam, or chocolate! 😋
