Hamburger Steak with Gravy

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks:

1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 recommended)

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 large egg

½ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)

2 tbsp milk

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp garlic powder

½ tsp onion powder

1 tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter (for frying)

For the Gravy:

2 tbsp butter

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups beef broth (low sodium)

½ cup sliced onions (optional: add mushrooms too)

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional, for richer flavor)

1. Make the Patties

1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings.

2. Mix just until combined (don’t overmix or it’ll be tough).

3. Shape into 4 oval or round patties.

2. Brown the Steaks

1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

2. Add patties and cook 3–4 minutes per side, until browned (they don’t need to be cooked through yet).

3. Remove patties and set aside.

3. Make the Gravy

1. In the same skillet, melt butter.

2. Add sliced onions (and mushrooms if using) and sauté until soft and golden.

3. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.

4. Gradually whisk in beef broth until smooth.

5. Add Worcestershire sauce and season to taste.

6. Simmer until slightly thickened.

4. Combine and Finish

1. Return the patties to the skillet.

2. Spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer 10–15 minutes until the steaks are cooked through and tender.

3. Adjust seasoning if needed.
